Pickens County, SC – According to 989 WORD, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), in collaboration with key conservation organizations, permanently protected more than 394 acres by dedicating the Little Eastatoe Connector on April 1, 2026. This initiative expanded the footprint and enhanced connectivity within the esteemed Jocassee Gorges Wildlife Management Area (WMA).
The Jocassee Gorges WMA, encompassing 32,861 acres, is celebrated for its rugged mountain terrain, pristine coldwater trout streams, and remarkable biodiversity situated along the Blue Ridge Escarpment. This area serves as vital habitat for rare plants and various species of conservation concern. It also provides abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hunting, fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. The landscapes feature a diverse mix of forested uplands, including planted pine stands, mixed pine forests, and hardwood ecosystems, contributing to the region’s ecological richness.
