Idaho Fish and Game Releases April Trout Stocking Schedule for Southeast Region Fisheries

Pocatello, Idaho – Idaho Fish and Game hatchery crews are preparing to stock nearly 48,000 catchable-sized rainbow trout across various fisheries in the Southeast Region throughout April, providing excellent opportunities for anglers to enjoy spring fishing.

With spring weather arriving, the department encourages outdoor enthusiasts to grab their fishing poles, pack a cooler, and ensure they have a valid fishing license before heading out. These stockings target popular ponds and reservoirs that cater to families, youth anglers, and experienced fishers alike, enhancing recreational access to quality trout fishing spots.

The stocking schedule highlights several key locations, each offering unique features and amenities. Bannock Reservoir, situated within the Portneuf Wellness Complex near the Pocatello County Fairgrounds, will receive 1,000 rainbow trout. This six-acre community pond is surrounded by playgrounds, soccer fields, basketball courts, running and biking trails, and an amphitheater, making it an ideal family destination. Multiple docks provide convenient access for shore-based fishing.

Blackfoot Reservoir, located about 16 miles north of Soda Springs, stands out as the second-largest reservoir in the Southeast Region at 17,000 surface acres when full. It will be stocked with 30,000 rainbow trout, joining existing populations of cutthroat trout and smallmouth bass. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the site features a campground with 16 developed first-come, first-served sites, day-use picnicking areas, a boat ramp, drinking water, electrical hook-ups, fire rings, and vault toilets.

Along the Bear River, 3,000 rainbow trout will be distributed: approximately 2,500 in the scenic Oneida Narrows section below the dam, which boasts the longest continuous public access along the entire river, and 500 below Alexander Dam. These reaches offer picturesque settings for anglers seeking river fishing experiences.

Crystal Springs Pond near Springfield will get 1,000 rainbow trout. As a spring-fed water body, it remains clear and cool year-round, appealing to those preferring consistent conditions. A paved walking path and docks facilitate easy access, making it particularly family-friendly.

Dingle Gravel Pond, adjacent to the Bear River east of Dingle in Bear Lake County, is slated for 1,000 rainbow trout. This convenient spot provides straightforward bank fishing opportunities.

Edson Fichter Pond, a three-acre site just minutes from downtown Pocatello within the 40-acre Edson Fichter Nature Area, will receive 950 rainbow trout. Equipped with several docks and trails encircling the pond, it welcomes leashed dogs as fishing companions. A dedicated ‘puppy pond’ on the property allows pets to cool off or practice retrieving.

Kelly Park Pond (Upper) in Soda Springs’ Arthur Kelly Park will stock 250 rainbow trout. Requiring a short walk to access, it presents a rewarding nature outing for anglers of all ages.

Near Springfield, McTucker Pond will be enhanced with 2,500 rainbow trout. Surrounded by willows and large cottonwood trees, it offers abundant bank fishing spots suitable for children, though docks are no longer available.

Finally, Montpelier Rearing Pond, nestled in a scenic high-desert canyon east of Montpelier, will add 250 rainbow trout. This tucked-away location serves as a perfect introductory fishing spot for kids.

Stocking dates for all these waters remain tentative and subject to changes based on water conditions, angler safety, weather, or staffing availability.
